bestantiqueapps.com is an independent project that tests and compares antique identification and valuation apps. I buy my own subscriptions, accept no payment for rankings, and benchmark every app against real, settled auction results, not marketing claims.

How this site works

Tested, not guessed

Every app is benchmarked against real auction results, not its own marketing. I photograph known items, run them through each app, and record how close the estimate lands.

No paid placements

Rankings can’t be bought, ever. No app pays to appear here or to rank higher. If that ever changes, this line disappears first.

I pay for my own subscriptions

I buy every paid app with my own money, so the review reflects what you’d actually get, not a free press account with features you’ll never see.

Affiliate links, disclosed

Some outbound links (the App Store, for example) may earn a small commission if you buy through them. This never affects rankings or scores, it just keeps the lights on.

I’m Marcus Reade. I’ve spent 15 years buying and selling antiques at estate sales, flea markets, and online, mostly silver, glass, and small furniture. I’m not a certified appraiser, and I won’t pretend to be. What I am is someone who’s tested these apps against real pieces from my own collection, with a background in software testing that makes me obsessive about doing it properly.

Why trust an app reviewer who isn’t an appraiser?

Because that’s exactly the point. I’m not selling appraisals. I’m testing which tools actually work, the same way you would if you had time to buy and trial all of them. When an app is wrong, I say so. When it’s right, I show the data.

How I test apps

1. I assemble items with known, recent sale prices from public auction archives.

2. Each is photographed under consistent lighting and run through every app.

3. Within 25% of hammer price = a hit. Wrong category or maker = a miss. An honest “cannot identify” is scored separately, and counts in the app’s favor.

What this site is not

This site doesn’t provide appraisals, valuations, or financial advice. The apps I review give estimates, useful starting points for research, not figures to take to an insurer, the IRS, or a courtroom. For anything official, consult a certified appraiser.
